Chef's Wine Label

The first annual Bud Break Festival will be on Saturday May 1st in downtown Mt Airy and Olde Mill will be there in force.  What a great event.  There will be wine tasting from 25 local vineyards, food, arts and crafts, and lots of live music on stage.  Please come out and support us as we provide some delicious Cabernet braised beef to compliment the release of our house blend red wine, Blue Ridge.  That’s right.  We our unveiling our red wine blend of local grapes at the festival.  Blue ridge wine is a joint effort from Old North State Winery and Olde Mill Resort.  Ben Webb and Chef Ed have put their minds and palates together to make a local blend of Tannat, Cabernet Franc and  Malbec.  The blend captures the best flavors of the region and the label and name represent our unique part of the world.  It is a very exciting time for all of us here and we hope you can take time to come visit us on Saturday afternoon in downtown Mt Airy, the weather should be great.

View from Buffalo Mnt.

There is more to Olde Mill than just mountain golf.  Today I went for a hike up Buffalo Mountain and man was it a gorgeous day for a hike!  I packed a PB sandwich and a bottle of water and went on my way.  The Buffalo is a 45 minute to 1 hour hike and offers some of the most spectacular views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.  Plus it is just 20 minutes away from Olde Mill!

The Maples crew is just finishing work on a breath taking rock wall around the 5th green. The rock wall was inspired by Bradley Maples (Dan Maples son) this is a great addition to a scenic hole.  All of  the stone for the wall was collected from the property here at Olde Mill.

This will make for an exciting approach shot over water to the  green. Making this par 5 one of the priemere holes in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Come escape to mountain golf at it’s finest nestled just off the Blue Ridge Parkway at Olde Mill.

Wood label winePort with boxDr. Loosen Wine Maker with Chef Ed and Paige

Paige and I were fortunate enough to attend the largest wine show in the state of Virginia recently.  It was chopped full of high end global wines.  There were not only wine makers but also some vineyard owners as well.  We met with Ernst Loosen from Dr Loosen Wines (pictured above next to Chef Ed).  This was a real thrill for us being that he is the biggest name in Riesling wines.  We are very proud to carry his Wolf  line of wines.  This was one of the many wine makers we met at this event.  It was a like a who’s who of the wine industry.

Also there were many vintage wines open for our sipping pleasure.  Some of these selections included vintage Port from 1980, a Lebanese Bordeaux style  red from 1969, a fortified Sherry from 1950 and a special treat of a 100 points on the Parker scale Syrah.  I can tell you they were all delicious and thoroughly appreciated.  This will be a representative of our dedication to bringing great wines to Olde Mill and educating our guests and staff on these wines.

A big thank you to Country Vintner for orchestrating this event to perfection.  If you ever get a chance to attend one of these you will be thoroughly impressed.  You can find more about Country Vintner at www.countryvintner.com

Chef Ed's Special Blend

Chef Ed's Special Blend

Over the winter, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to blend Olde Mill’s own label with General Manager/Winemaker Ben Webb at Old North State Winery in nearby Mount Airy, NC.  It was an incredible opportunity to work behind the scenes of one of the premiere wineries in the Yadkin Valley. I now have a greater appreciation of just how much hard work and love goes into each bottle.  In our continuing effort to utilize local harvest, we have teamed up with someone special.  Let me tell you a little bit about the guy that made it all possible.

Ben was born and raised in Mount Airy NC, attended East Carolina University then transferred to Surry Community Collage to attend the Viticulture and Enology program. In 2002 while attending classes Ben planted and maintained Sandy Cross Vineyards a 15 acre organic Muscadine Vineyards.  Ben has been the winemaker at Old North State Winery since 2006 and has recently added brewing beer to the lineup, making Old North State Winery the only licensed Winery & Brewery in North Carolina.

We expect a long fruitful relationship between Olde Mill and Old North State.  I intend to have yearly releases of blends that best reflect the palates of our Members and guests.  Olde Mill will release our first blend this May. Stay tuned for tasting notes and availability.
