Delicious Wines Are Hard to Find Before Their Time

by »

It is not so easy to weed out all the mediocre and sub-par wines that are flooding the markets these days.  Let’s face it, if you tried to taste each of the thousands of labels released every year, you would have no time to actually sit down and enjoy the one you really like.  That’s where we come in.  Now I don’t have time to taste them all either, but I do have a secret weapon, Scott Drake of the Country Vintner.

Scott is my main man when it comes to locating great wines at great values.  We do a small sampling of six to ten wines every week.  This helps me to understand the changes in the regional markets.  I never want to sit back and let the competition catch up.  Here at Olde Mill, we will continue to blaze ahead in search of great new labels before they get discovered and inflated in price.  Scott is a master of research.  He is also somewhat of a workaholic.  This makes for a very well informed wine rep.  So we reap the rewards.

You have heard me speak of our local wines and how much we support them all.  But we also offer great wines from all over the world.  Just take our South American selections for instance.  We carry a press favorite, Catena.  Both the chardonnay and the malbec are regularly scored in the 90′s by all the big wine publications.  Not coincidentally, these are two of our top selling wines.  But what about those “under the radar” wines from south of the border.

Scott has led us to some amazing values.

Arido Sauvignon Blanc. Perfect for a meal on our deck on a warm summer’s day.  Produced by Carlos Pulenta who is awarded scores in the 90′s for many of his wines.

Valle Escondido by Gouguenheim.  We carry the merlot which is as complex as a 40 dollar bottle at half the price.  No surprise that the malbec, which we offer by the glass, is also a heavy hitter at reasonable price.

Altosur Cabernet Sauvignon by Sophenia.  Sophenia is praised by the likes of Robert Parker and scores in the 90′s as well.  Altosur is there entry level wine that offers oak and fresh fruit flavors that are unusually complex at this price.  Altosur has been acknowledged as a best buy, too.

Scott and I will be hosting a wine tasting in the very near future.  He is currently in South America doing some more research for Country Vintner

We hope you join us for some of our new discoveries that we will feature throughout the season!
