Olde Mill 5k Fun Run Benefit

by »

Come out on June 23rd for our first ever Olde Mill 5k Fun Run.  This will be a chance to get our and help raise some much needed funding for our local Relay 4 Life chapter and the Laurel Fork Volunteer Fire Department.  Two very worthy causes.  Come out and run or walk the beautiful 3.1 mile course.  We will also have a 1 mile run for the kids.  It will be fun for the whole family!

We are looking for donations of any kind to help defray any costs that ensue, such as tee shirt printing and refreshments.  We are putting company logos on our complimentary tee shirts for anyone donating $100 dollars or more.  I want to thank Trio Restaurant and Old North State Winery for their early donations.  Please feel free to contact me for further details.  I will be looking for you on the 23rd in your best running shoes!

Titanic Dinner Theater Wine Dinner

by »

There are a dwindling amount of seats left for our first dinner theater event here at Maples Restaurant.  After much research and tasting, I have settled on our wine pairings for the five course dinner.  I think you will be just blown away with the quality of these wines from all over the globe.  My thought process was this: think decadent, just like the guests did on that ill-fated voyage.  It was the best food and wines from all over the globe.  This is my version of the classic menu items that were found on the Titanic menus.  I am very excited about sharing this experience with our guests on May 5th.

Bon Voyage!

Spring Pea Soup with Goat Cheese and Proscuitto paired with Butternut Chardonnay

Roasted Quail Salad with Local Greens, Bing Cherries, and Toasted Almonds paired with Angeline Reserve Pinot Noir

Fillet of Beef with Duchess Potatoes, Asparagus, and Bearnaise Sauce paired withHendry HRW Cabernet Sauvignon

Orange Surprise – Orange Sherbert with Whipped Meringue paired with Degiorgis Muscato

Cheese Selection – Artisan Cheeses, Fruit, Jam, and Toast Points paired with Ware’s LBV Port

Delicious hand made candies with all sorts of flavor options

We have paired Southern Tradition candy with Olde Mill Resort to create our own custom line of candy.  We have a wide range of butter cream candies that are simply decadent.  They are buttery and sweet with a beautiful light finish.  I have been into the raspberry flavor a little too much today.  It is another way that we support local business while bringing to you our guests the best quality products available.  Please share these with your friends and family.  Or, just share them with your favorite chef when you visit Maples or the Tavern.

Chef Seminar at Sysco of Virginia

by »

My sous chef, JC , and I headed up Highway 81 Monday night to Harrisonburg for the opportunity to see the Sysco Virginia facility.  Tuesday morning we were treated to a one hour tasting by the corporate chef, Corey Abdella.  We must have tasted over a couple of dozen new innovative products that have been unveiled this year.  It was a fast and furious hour that had us chomping on everything from tomato chutney to chicken drumsticks.  Corey is a real pro and answered our questions with ease and confidence.  JC and I picked up some great ideas for dishes in the upcoming menus for this summer.  You will see some of these products over the coming months.

We then had an hour long marketing and networking seminar.  It consisted of different ideas to better serve our guests and make their stays more memorable.  Many of the ideas that different professionals shared with us were ideas that we are already using here at Olde Mill like our Titanic Dinner Theater and Octoberfest.  It’s good to know that we are on the forefront of the service industry.  Our membership program is a perfect example of how we here at Olde Mill Resort continue to find new ways to make it the place to be in 2012.

JC and I then got the tour of the warehouse.  This is one massive facility.  over half a million square feet of refrigerated foods.  It was so impressive to see how our food gets from the farm to the kitchen with such care.  The people at Sysco take great pride in their work and cleanliness.  You could practically eat off the warehouse floors.  As you can imagine, the refrigeration is essential to this building, and we were allowed to go into the inner workings of the system.  To say it was elaborate would be an understatement.  I tip my hat to all the men and women at Sysco who make all this possible so that we can get the freshest food in our kitchen each and every week.

U.S. Foods Rep David MacLeod: A Chef’s Friend

by »

As an ongoing series of introductions to our food suppliers, I would like to introduce you to Dave MacLeod.  Dave has been in the food industry for over 30 years.  It is safe to say that it is in his blood.  Dave has a vast knowledge of products for our kitchen ovens all the way down to cocktail straws for our bar drinks.  Dave works for U.S. Foods, who has everything you could possibly need to run a restaurant or resort.  We get all sorts of stuff other than the obvious choice, food, from U.S. foods.  We purchase tea, soap, knives, glasses, housekeeping products and more.  I know that whenever we need something, Dave will make it happen.  Many a time this man has packed food in his own vehicle to deliver a product that we desperately needed.  I can always count on Dave to give the best service in the business.  This translates to better food quality and service for all of our guests.  Thanks Dave.

Olde Mill Hosts Benefit Poker Run

by »

All of us here at Olde Mill find ways to get involved in our community and try to help those who need it the most.  This past weekend we were the starting point for a fund raising event to help a family in need. The money raised is to help support the Adam Ashton family.  He was tragically taken from this world far too early, leaving behind a family of three children and a lovely wife.  Adam worked here at Olde Mill years ago while attending high school.  Our hearts go out to the whole family.  It is obvious by the sheer numbers that Adam was loved by many.  There were over 100 motorcycles and over 20 cars that participated in the event that blazed through our country roads.  The run ended at Three Cheers in Hillsville after going to Stuart and by Nester’s Store here in Laurel Fork.  It was a beautiful day for a ride and a beautiful thing to see so many people giving their time and money to help Adam’s family.

Wine Tasting

by »

Chris Rasco, our food and beverage director, and I made our highly anticipated trip to Richmond this week for the Country Vintner Wine Show.  Thanks to our gracious guest, Scott Drake, we were shuttled in style to our destination.  This is the premiere wine event of the season.  This is one of the select wine shows that have the actual wine makers and winery owners in person rather than a sales rep.  It is a golden opportunity to meet these legends in the business and pick their brains a bit.  It is literally a who’s who of the wine making industry.  I was lucky enough to get this photo of  Andrea Fossi and a friend.  You may recognize his name by the beautiful 1999 Chianti Classico that we carry here at Olde Mill.  Andrea proudly mentions that it is his grandfather’s portrait on the bottle.  Andrea is a third generation wine maker.  He is very proud of his family and their heritage.  We are offering one of Fossi’s delicious white wines this year, the Annalisa Soave.  This is so perfect for our cuisine with all the great seafood and salads we offer all summer long.  Come up and try a glass, or bottle, of this delicious wine and get in a summer frame of mind.  The deck awaits you!
